Technology research through building.
Vainamo is a technology research and venture-building initiative of Rene Investments Ab.
We investigate technologies by building and operating real systems. Our current focus is the Vainamo Global Network, a distributed infrastructure project that provides a foundation for research and future technology ventures.
Current project
Infrastructure as a research platform.
The Vainamo Global Network is a distributed network infrastructure project being built and operated by Vainamo.
The network connects infrastructure across Europe, North America, and Asia and provides a foundation for experimentation, research, and future technology projects.
By designing, deploying, and operating our own infrastructure, we gain practical experience in networking, systems administration, data centers, security, redundancy, automation, and distributed infrastructure.
Vainamo operates its own data center in Vantaa, Finland. Other parts of the global network run through data centers operated by trusted partners in Switzerland, the United States, and Singapore.
Research framework
Building infrastructure teaches things that cannot always be learned from documentation alone.
By designing and operating VGN ourselves, we gain practical experience in how distributed infrastructure is designed, deployed, automated, secured, monitored, and maintained.
Operating infrastructure at our own scale also gives us a practical perspective on the engineering and operational challenges faced by large-scale infrastructure providers.
01
How geographically distributed networks are designed and interconnected.
02
How servers, connectivity, power, facilities, and physical infrastructure come together.
03
How infrastructure and software systems are deployed, automated, monitored, and maintained.
04
How redundancy, geographic diversity, and failure affect system availability.
05
How infrastructure is protected and how trust boundaries are designed.
06
What it actually takes to operate infrastructure continuously over time.
Method
01
Explore emerging technologies and identify interesting technical or commercial problems.
02
Create software, prototypes, infrastructure, and experiments to test ideas in practice.
03
Operate what we build and document what works, what fails, and what we discover.
04
Turn promising findings into products, projects, ventures, or potentially independent companies.
Findings
Vainamo documents the practical knowledge gained from its projects, so that experience accumulates instead of disappearing.
How to design, deploy, and operate geographically distributed infrastructure.
How network components interact in a real operating environment.
How infrastructure operations can be automated and made reproducible.
How systems behave when components, providers, or locations fail.
What infrastructure actually costs to build and operate at different scales.
Which technical decisions remain sensible as systems grow.
